Chinese New Year
2006 is the Year of the Dog

Dogs hold a special place in America and as the most popular pet in the country, are considered to be treasured members of our families. Dogs are the most honest representations of loyalty, dedication, and reliability. Consider 2006 to be an opportunity to honor all the courageous working dogs, dedicated assistance and therapy dogs, and faithful pets.

The Chinese Zodiac consists of a 12-year cycle and each year within a cycle is represented by an animal “sign.” 2006 is designated as the Year of the Dog. A full year dedicated to America’s most popular pet provides a great opportunity for us to acknowledge how they influence and enhance our daily lives.

Years of the Dog: 1910, 1922, 1934,
1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006

Characteristics of the dog:
Does this sound like your personality? Like
their representative animal, people born in the Year
of the Dog are deeply loyal and possess a great sense
of duty. They tend to be faithful and honest and
enjoy helping others. You can rely on them to not
let you down in a time of need. A dog person can
keep secrets and is a very good listener. However,
the dog also constantly worries and has the tendency
to look for faults in those that surrounds him.

Famous People Born in the Year of the Dog: Benjamin
Franklin, Cher, George Gershwin, Herbert Hoover,
Madonna, and Winston Churchill.

Heartworm Disease
A Growing Threat

The best program for prevention of heartworm infection includes annual testing, reducing exposure to mosquitoes, and using heartworm preventatives throughout the year.

Mosquitoes are not only pests to us; they can be a real health hazard to your dog. A single bite from a mosquito in a heartworm-infested area can infect any dog with heartworm, a dangerous disease.

Heartworm disease is found throughout the United Sates. The actual number of infected dogs and cats is unknown. Heartworms belong to the same class of worms as roundworms. In fact, they look a bit like roundworms, but that is where the similarity ends. Heartworms spend their adult life in the right side of the heart and the large blood vessels connecting the heart to the lungs.

In 2005, the American Heartworm Society (AHS) issued new guidelines for heartworm prevention in dogs. According to the AHS, only about 50% of dogs living in areas where heartworm occurs are on heartworm preventatives. Of those that do receive heartworm preventatives, a full 75% do not get their full dosage. With this in mind, the AHS has updated their guidelines to include:

*Annual Testing
The AHS is recommending a stricter testing routine than was previously advised. Whereas in the past the AHS recommended testing every two or three years, they now advocate annual testing. They also recommend cats be tested before starting on a heartworm preventative. Annual testing ensures that a heartworm infection is caught in time to manage it effectively.

*Testing when changing preventatives
If a pet is to be switched from one heartworm preventative to another, the AHS recommends additional testing for heartworm disease. For instance, when switching preventatives, the dog should be tested before switching, 3-4 months after the switch was made, and again 8 to 9 months after the switch was made.

*Year-round preventatives
Because of the high percentage of dogs not getting the full course of heartworm preventatives, the AHS is now recommending year-round use, even in areas where mosquitoes appear only seasonally. If given consistently over a 12-month period, the preventatives can actually stop juvenile stages of the heartworms from developing into adults, in addition to having activity against some intestinal parasites. These parasites inadvertently infect three to six million people every year.

Tip of the Month

Housebreaking and Crate Training
A Process of Elimination
Housebreaking your new puppy need not break you. With patience, diligence, and a calm, authoritative manner, you can teach your dog exactly where he should eliminate and where he should not.

What you should do
Here’s a play-by-play of how to housebreak your puppy

*1 The key to success is simple: Timing is everything.

*2 Take your puppy outside immediately after eating, playing, or napping (approximately every two hours). Keeping this rigid schedule will prevent him from making mistakes in the house.

Fact! Keep this number in mind:
15 minutes after your puppy
eats or plays vigorously, he
will need to eliminate. As he
gets older, he will be able to
wait longer. An adult dog
eliminates three to four times
a day and will learn to hold it
– within reason.

*3 Some trainers recommend giving your dog a command like “Potty time!” or “Go to the bathroom!” at the moment your pup is correctly doing his business outside. Eventually, whenever you say that phrase, the dog will eliminate on cue.

*4 Much like a little boy who dances up and down when he has to go to the bathroom, a puppy’s behavior will let you know that he needs to go outside. If he whine, paces, or runs in a circle, grab the leash and get out the door.

Tip! Always feed and water
your puppy at the same time
every day. If he eats at regular
intervals, he will relieve
himself at regular intervals, too.

Tip! Even if you’re in a hurry,
don’t bring the puppy back
inside as soon as he does
his business. If you do, he
will learn that once he
eliminates, the fun walk is over
and he’ll start to “hold it”
for longer periods.
