Most countries have very strict entry restrictions for dogs and cats.  Health certificates and rabies vaccinations are the most commone requirements.  The UK and Ireland do not allow the transport of dogs and cats as checked baggage, but require that they travel as Air Cargo.  Failure to follow import regulations for pets can result in the pets being in quarantine an extended period of time or, in some cases, destryed upon arrival.

Note: Effective October 1, 2004, new regulations for customers traveling with pets to European Union destinations are:
*Pets must be marked with a micro-chip or a clearly readable tattoo.
*Pets must have a valid anti-rabies vaccination, which must be verified by presenting a Veterinary Certificate for the Non-commercial Movement of Pet Animals into the European Union.

Active vaccination cartificates issued prior to October 1, 2004 remain valid until July 1, 2005 if the document confirms that the European Union regulations are fulfilled.
